Minot State Friday roundup

The Minot State women’s hockey team kicked off a busy Friday evening for Beavers athletics, welcoming the University of Colorado Buffaloes for the first of two games at the Maysa Arena. The meeting marked the third of the season between the two teams, and first since Minot State swept Colorado by an aggregate 8-0 in two games Oct. 8-9.

Backed by Jordan Ivanco in goal, the No. 2 Beavers (20-4-0-0) remained perfect against the Buffaloes with a 4-0 victory Saturday afternoon. A trio of second-period Minot State goals by Sydney Spicer, Megan Norris and Krissy Rink broke the stalemate after a scoreless first frame, and Riley Ball added a fourth insurance tally 6:09 into the third period.

Ivanco made 15 saves in her fourth shutout of the season and fourth straight win. The Beavers will conclude the series Saturday evening at 5 p.m.

The Minot State women’s basketball squad was unable to build upon a three-game win streak against the Upper Iowa University Peacocks, falling 80-71 on the road. The Beavers (8-11 overall, 6-6 NSIC) bounced back from a first quarter during which they were outscored 25-18, winning the second 21-13.

A fourth quarter that saw Minot State outscored by 10 did the Beavers in, despite 22 Kate Head points. Amber Stevahn added 16 and Natasha Elliott scored 12 in the defeat. Minot State will look to pull back to .500 on the road trip Saturday afternoon at Winona State University, with tipoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

The Minot State wrestling team is still in search of its first meet victory of the season following a 26-10 loss to Minnesota State University, Mankato, its fourth straight loss to begin the season.

Oscar Nellis began the meet on a high note for the Beavers, besting Trenton McManus by a 5-3 sudden victory in overtime. Cannon Potts and Keegan Berry recorded the only other wins for Minot State with a 10-8 decision and 14-3 major decision, respectively. The Beavers will look to bounce back against Southwest Minnesota State at 2 p.m. Saturday evening.

The men’s basketball squad was also unable to top Upper Iowa Friday night, falling to the Peacocks by a 77-62 final score. The Beavers (12-5 overall, 6-5 NSIC) were outscored 44-32 in the first 20 minutes of play and snapped a two-game win streak. Cam’ron Dunfee notched 20 points for Minot State, and Max Cody scored 13 while Eli Cave produced 10. The Beavers will look to bounce back at Winona State Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.

The No. 2 Beavers men’s hockey team rode a fast start to a 7-3 win over the Midland Warriors, marking the team’s eighth straight win. Drew Carter potted a pair of first-period goals to accompany a score by Josh Pederson to give Minot State a 3-0 lead after the first period, and Davis Sheldon and Jay Buchholz added tallies in the second period as well. Reece Henry and Jared Hamm rounded out the Beavers’ (23-2-0-0) scoring on the night, and Riley Wallace saved 19 of 22 Warriors shots in the win. Minot State will go for the sweep of Midland at 8 p.m. Saturday night.
