Where’s promised drop in egg prices?
Dean Hulse, Fargo
Remember when President Trump promised immediate action on egg prices? Here’s a refresher for those Trump-supporting spinmeisters: last August he said, “When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on day one.”
Well … egg prices increased more than 8 percent from November to December, according to the Consumer Price Index. Furthermore, experts say the increases are likely to continue as long as outbreaks of the highly pathogenic avian flu persist. (We already know how Trump likes dealing with disease outbreaks.)
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expecting a total year-long increase of 20.3 percent in egg prices for 2025. So, what does President Trump have planned? Shutter the USDA to stifle the bad news?
Or, will he announce plans to “acquire” more territory for the United States? So far, Canada, Greenland, Panama and Gaza are in his sleight-of-hand sights.
Yes, it’s all most likely a shell game aimed to deflect from his inability to affect the economy — as he promised. Of course, his threatened tariffs are sure to improve inflation. Just ask about any economist (who’s not a frequent contributor to Fox News).
But back to Gaza, here’s a question addressed to all those voters who sat out the 2024 presidential election on principle, due to former President Biden’s handling of the Gaza war. Are you better off today than you were just four months ago?
