School meals translate to student success

Ensuring that every child has access to healthy school meals is about reducing hunger and is an investment in North Dakota’s economy. That’s why I strongly support HB 1475, a bill that would provide school meals at no charge to all students.

As the Child Nutrition Program Director for Bismarck Public Schools, I recently testified in favor of HB 1475, highlighting its economic benefits. Increased meal participation means greater demand for North Dakota’s agricultural products. If this bill passes, schools statewide could purchase an additional 2.1 million cartons of milk annually, benefiting local dairy farmers. Also, North Dakota could receive an estimated $7.7M through the federal government to buy U.S. Commodity Agricultural products, boosting demand for items like beef, chicken, potatoes, and cheese.

HB 1475 would also create jobs. School meal programs operate on a “meals per labor hour” model — when more meals are served, more staff is needed. A projected 20% increase in breakfast participation and 15% in lunch means more employment opportunities across our communities.

Nutritious meals are essential for academic success. Studies show children with access to balanced meals concentrate better, perform higher on tests, and have improved memory — key to closing achievement gaps and ensuring equal learning opportunities.

Together for School Meals coalition includes over 65 local organizations, supports HB 1475 because it strengthens families, supports farmers, and boosts our local economy. Investing in school meals is a win for North Dakota’s children and its workforce.

I urge our legislators to support HB 1475 and make a commitment to both our students and our state’s economic future.
