Let’s keep funding NPR, PBS

Barb Solberg, Minot

As a resident of North Dakota, I am deeply disheartened and ashamed by the recent decision of our ND House of Representatives to cut funding for PBS and NPR. These esteemed institutions have long been pillars of education, culture, and unbiased news reporting in our community, and their absence will be felt acutely across our state.

PBS and NPR have played an invaluable role in promoting education. Through their diverse programming, they have brought STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) knowledge into our homes, inspiring both our young children, young adults, and adult lifelong learners. Shows like “Nova,” PBS NewsHour,” and “Science Friday” have fostered a spirit of curiosity and exploration, helping to bridge the educational gap that often exists in rural areas like ours.

Culturally, PBS and NPR have been a vibrant tapestry that weaves together the stories of our nation. From the historical documentaries of Ken Burns to the thought-provoking interviews on “Fresh Air,” these programs have enriched our understanding of the world and connected us to a larger human experience. They have celebrated diversity, highlighted social issues, and provided a platform for voices that might otherwise go unheard. Homegrown PBS programs like MainStreet and Dakota Datebook not only celebrate what is currently happening in our state but also connect us to our history as we hear about what happened many years ago.

In an era where misinformation runs rampant, the role of unbiased news reporting cannot be overstated. PBS and NPR have consistently delivered accurate and balanced news coverage, free from commercial influences. They have been a reliable source of information, helping us make informed decisions as citizens. Their commitment to journalistic integrity has set them apart in a media landscape that is often driven by sensationalism, partisanship, and attention grabbing.

The decision to defund these organizations is a shortsighted move that undermines the values of education, culture, and informed citizenship that we hold dear. It is a disservice to the people of North Dakota and a step backward in our pursuit of a knowledgeable and connected society.

I urge our lawmakers to reconsider this decision and to recognize the irreplaceable contributions that PBS and NPR make to our community. The cost of losing these vital resources far outweighs any budgetary savings. Let us not turn our backs on the institutions that have served us so well for so long.
