Christians should not want to follow Trump
Michael Williams, Minot
Who? Who is claiming to be a Christian and yet still follows and supports Donald Trump? Do we not know that God hates haughty eyes, a lying tongue, a false witness, and one who spreads strife among brothers? Proverbs 6:16-19. Do we not see that Trump is a false witness who spreads strife while displaying haughty eyes and a lying tongue openly every day? How? How does he have so many so-called evangelicals fooled into believing he is for Christ? Do we not see that his speech is full of lies? Do we not see that his lifestyle and conduct are openly against Christ?
During a Family Leadership Summit in July of 2015, while speaking with Frank Luntz, Donald Trump was asked if he had ever asked God for forgiveness. At 69 years old, Trump openly argued, at length, against asking God for forgiveness and, in fact, admitted that he has not and will not. Evangelical Christians should know that there is no salvation without repentance. Trump’s own words testify against him. He is neither saved nor a Christian.
Matthew 7:15-20 tells us to beware of false prophets and that we will know them by their bad fruit. The bad fruits that Trump has been producing for at least the past 8 years and continues to produce today are deep hatred, dissensions, adultery, factions, idolatry, rage, lies, and indecent behavior, just to name a few.
How is this bad fruit not obvious to all who claim to know or follow Christ? Could it be a lack of knowledge? A limited relationship with Jesus? Erroneous teaching? How can anyone say they know Christ, who is the truth, and still, openly, or privately, follow and support all the fruit discussed that is on display in Trump? We should know who he is from the fruit he produces.
How can anyone say they love Jesus but hate the truth of his words? We cannot serve two masters. Matthew 6:24. Not two Corinthians, but second Corinthians 6:14-18 says not to be aligned with unbelievers, lawlessness, darkness, and idols. Trump openly rejects asking God for forgiveness and repentance. Trump openly argues and believes that laws should not apply to him. His conduct and subsequent eighty-five criminal charges testify to that. He attacks everyone who does not worship him with complete loyalty, reminiscent of Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel 3:1-18. Even calling himself “your retribution” as an added component to his idolatry.
He has been found liable, by juries and judges, for victimizing people. Think E. Jean Caroll, Trump University students, and numerous unpaid workers and contractors, among others. Then he goes on to victimize them even more by publicly defaming, berating, and threatening them for seeking justice against his injustice. This is darkness and lawlessness. Christians should have no desire to follow Trump; we follow Christ. Why would a follower of Jesus want to support someone who doesn’t show any Christ-like traits?
