In 1954, Richard began a new career in road construction in western Montana. During this time Phyllis applied for a job with a construction company that earned them a 15 cent-per-hour raise.
Phyllis gave birth to her first son, Steve, on Sept. 23, 1956. On April 10, 1958, they started their business buying a Husky service station in Plevna, Mont., and began a 23-year JI Case dealership there, moving that business to Baker, Mont., in June of 1964. Phyllis gave birth to her second son, Kim, on May 28, 1960. On Oct. 30, 1969, Phyllis completed her first solo flight in their airplane. In 1981, they bought and operated a motel in Brownwood, Texas, for six years. The Pinnow’s were active members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Rockwall, Texas. Richard died of cancer on July 21, 1994.
After Phyllis cared for her brother in Copperas Cove, Texas, until his death, she moved to Wellington Assisted Living Center, Minot, in 2014. On Nov. 10, 2024, Phyllis suffered a stroke that took 98% of her speech and all of her mobility.
