Dr. H. William ‘Bill’ Wassink, 92, longtime Minot optometrist, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Edgewood Vista Memory Care in Minot.
Bill was born in Sheboygan, WI on March 18, 1932. His childhood was spent in Manitowoc WI. He was a star athlete at Manitowoc High School, as quarterback of the varsity football team, and school record holder in the 100-yard dash.
After High School Bill enrolled in at Carroll College, Waukesha, WI, where he met his wife to be Sigrid Angstrom. Following graduation from Carroll College he enlisted in the U.S. Army, stationed in Clarksville, TN, where he served as a paratrooper. Following his military service he enrolled in Optometric School in Chicago, IL.
After graduation Bill and Sig moved to Minot, ND, where he practiced Optometry at Minot Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Clinic. Bill would spend the next 40 years serving the Minot community. Bill’s active life included running, golf, tennis, and bowling. He was a member of the Minot YMCA for over 50 years and loved sharing his morning jokes with his pals. He was also a proud shareholder in the Green Bay Packers. The family spent summers at their cabin at Lake Metigoshe, and after retirement in 1997 Bill and Sig spent winters in Arizona.
After Sigrid passed away on June 26, 2016, Bill lived with their little Yorkshire Terrier, Jaime, for more than 6 years. He moved into Edgewood Vista in November of 2021.
Bill’s family includes children Mark (Julie) Wassink of Brainerd MN, Jayne (Terry) Greuel of Minot, Ann (Duane) Massine of Alliance, NE, Dirk (Jane) Wassink of Hastings, MN, and Amy (Chris) Pokrzywinski of Grand Forks, ND. Nine grandchildren: Nate (Jennine) Wassink, Tasha (Bob) Henrikson, Max (Erin) Greuel, Lee (Jennifer) Greuel, Nicholas (Cassa) Massine, Tim (Jamie) Massine, Jessica Wassink, Shelby (Logan) Chilson, and Lilli Pokrzywinski. Eleven great grandchildren: Jazmyn Iten, Addyson Henrikson, Benson and Iliana Wassink, Nora and Holly Greuel, Elsie and Atlas Greuel, Summit Massine, Krue Massine and Bri Elle Jewett. Great great grandchild: Phoebe Iten. Sisters: Nola Liaros and Karen Andrews.

Memorials are preferred to Minot YMCA or Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Minot.
