Richard “Mac” McBride

Nov. 6, 1944-Dec. 17, 2024

Minot

Richard E. ‘Mac’ McBride, 80, Minot and longtime Minot Police Officer, died on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 in a Minot hospital.

Richard Edward McBride was born on November 6, 1944 in Somerville, NJ to Luther and Dorothy (Gould) McBride. He was raised and educated in New Jersey and graduated from South Plainfield High School. Mac served as a security policeman with the US Air Force from August 20, 1963 until August 18, 1967 and was stationed at Minot Air Force Base.

Mac married Linda Zimmer on January 18, 1985 at Evanger Lutheran Church near Kenmare, ND. They made their home Minot where Mac continued his career in law enforcement with the Minot Police Department for 37 years, until retiring in 2004. During his career with the police department, he did foot and car patrolling, oversaw the SWAT and bomb teams, worked in the detective division and was a shift commander. He had a great deal of respect for his fellow police officers and was a very dedicated and proud member of the Minot Police Department.

During their marriage and retirement years, Mac and Linda enjoyed many wonderful vacations including a memorable Caribbean Cruise, car trips to Yellowstone, Zion and Grand Canyon National Parks, Las Vegas. NV, and a trip to Hawaii. Mac and Linda especially enjoyed many fun fishing excursions and even though Mac did buy Linda a shotgun and she once managed to shoot a bird, she let him use the gun for his hunting excursions with his brothers-in-law and other buddies. Mac also did a lot of reading and dabbled in woodworking and building model airplanes. He enjoyed playing pinochle and Yahtzee and taking lots of walks, especially after having made his own walking stick.

Although Linda and Mac never had children of their own, they were aunt and uncle to eight nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Mac was also very proud of his two dogs, Buddy and Spike, who were very dear to his heart.

Mac was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church and was a volunteer with the American Red Cross and Optimist Club.

Mac was the most loving, caring and considerate husband and I (Linda) thank God so much that he brought us together. Mac will be in my heart forever.

Mac is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Linda; brother: Luther McBride of New Jersey; in-laws: Harold Zimmer (Sue Roise), Philip (Gail) Zimmer and Margaret Zimmer and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, two great- great nieces , one great- great nephew, and his loving and faithful, 4-legged walking companion, Corky.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister: Doris and her husband Ray Lestarchick; sister-in-law Barbara McBride; parents-in-law: Odell and Mildred (Haugstad) Zimmer, brother-in-law: Loren Zimmer and grandnephew: Briggs Arthur Zimmer.

A special thank you to the staff at Cookies Cottage of Edgewood Vista Memory Unit for the wonderful TLC given to Mac during his 4.5 month stay and to the doctors and nurses of Trinity Medical Center for their care and compassion given to Mac and Linda during his 6 day stay prior to passing.
