Rolette
Mark Dale Myhre, age 59, passed away unexpectedly on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2024, at his home in Rolette, ND. The younger son of Carl and Lois Myhre, Mark was born in Rolette on March 22, 1965. He attended Rolette High School and Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, graduating with a degree in business administration. Mark then returned to Rolette to go to work at the Rolette State Bank and Rolette Insurance Agency, joining his dad and brother Jay in the business as he had wanted to do since childhood. Mark’s great-grandfather was one of the founders of the bank, and his grandfather and, later, father, were president. Mark eventually became executive vice-president of the bank and one of its directors. Mark found great joy in the customers and staff at the bank, where he spent his entire working life.
He was very interested and involved in the Rolette community, including acting as mayor of the town, volunteer firefighter, and as member of the City Council and the Airport Authority. He was a lifelong and faithful member of Valle Lutheran Church, participating on the Church Council.
Mark packed a lot of life into his years. He was big-hearted and very generous, and he loved to surprise and delight those he loved. When his mother celebrated her birthday in Florida, Mark surprised her by flying down and showing up at their door with two gigantic bouquets hiding his face. He was the family organizer, the kid who got things done! Sometimes he made things happen a little too quickly! If someone mused about possibly buying a new car, Mark would likely show up a few hours later with a car for them to test-drive. He loved to travel and took many interesting trips, including sailing on a mailboat up the coast of Norway, cruising across the Atlantic, traveling through Europe, visiting Japan, bear hunting in Manitoba, and taking numerous trips to Alaska. He loved the outdoors and delighted in time spent in the Turtle Mountains, whether at the lake cabin or the hunting cabin, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, hunting, or just being. He always had dogs, golden retrievers named Dudley and Mike. Mark was quick-witted and funny. He enjoyed conversing with people and made connections easily. He was very independent, and he could be stubborn. He did everything in a big way, and his love was big too.
Mark was accomplished in many ways. He learned to fly, piloting his own small plane and also becoming licensed as a float plane pilot. He was certified as a SCUBA diver. He also enjoyed woodworking and tinkering with things. He was good at coming up with solutions. He loved to read, but only nonfiction books. He had a sharp mind for business and was good at his job.
In 2010, Mark was diagnosed with brain cancer. The biopsy and treatment damaged his brain and hampered his abilities and vision. The cancer recurred a few years later, leading to further intensive treatment, which stole more. Yet Mark continued to battle the invader, taking monthly chemotherapy for the last several years of his life. And he continued to show a brave and cheerful face; if you conversed with him, you may not have noticed that anything was amiss.
Mark loved and cherished his family above all else, and his niece and nephews held a special place. Annual fishing trips to Jan Lake, MB, with family were a highlight, and he enjoyed the yearly family trip to Clear Lake, MB. When his dad was in the Community Care Center, Mark joined him to have a noon meal almost daily. He loved gathering with family for almost any reason. He was also a good and dedicated friend. He will be sorely missed by those who loved him.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Carl Myhre; mother, Lois Myhre; an infant brother, Jon; and a stillborn sister. He leaves behind his siblings Carla Myhre-Vogt (Steve Vogt) of Buffalo, MN, and Jay Myhre (Judi) of Rolette; niece and nephews Madison (Jaden) Munyer of Dickinson, ND, Nicholas Myhre of Rolette, Carter (Kelsey) Vogt of Lindstrom, MN, and Tucker Vogt (fiancée Sidney Downing) of Victoria, MN; and great-nephew Crew Vogt.
Services for Mark will be held at 11:30 AM Thursday, December 5, at Valle Lutheran Church in Rolette; visitation prior. Memorials preferred to Valle Lutheran Church or the Rolette Community Care Center.
