Dorothea Howey
Jan. 16, 1925-Nov. 30, 2024
Minot
Dorothea Howey, 99, Minot, died Saturday, November 30, 2024, in a Minot hospital.
Dorothea Roszzella Mosbrucker was born January 16, 1925, in Bowman, ND to John and Magdalena (Lutz) Mosbrucker. She was raised and attended school in Bowman, graduating with the Bowman High School Class of 1943.
Dorothea was employed as an assistant for the School Superintendent in Bowman and later the Soil Conservation Service, USDA in both Bowman and New England, ND on a part-time basis for five years. She met Robert Howey while working in New England. When Robert moved to Minot for work, he commuted to court her, and they married on May 1, 1948, in Bowman. They made their home in Minot. This union would be blessed with four children. Along with caring for her children, she also watched two toddlers, Lynn and Rip, while their parents were employed at Minot Air Force Base as civilians.
Dorothea continued her part time work with the Soil Conservation Service in Minot. She also held positions at General Trading, JCPenney’s and The Elegancy in Minot along with managing her rental properties in Minot and Bowman. Robert passed away on March 31, 1979.
Dorothea was a charter member of Little Flower Catholic Church in Minot. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers, holding various offices in her active years at the church. Dorothea was also a member of the St. Joseph’s Auxiliary and two birthday groups that met for monthly luncheons over the years. She was one to keep busy and was known to assist others by ironing clothes, sewing and mending, visiting residents at the nursing home, sending birthday cards to family and friends in addition to gifting and donating over 50 tied fleece blankets.
Dorothea enjoyed crafting and ceramics, hosting holiday craft sales and weekly ceramic nights with many special friends, embroidering dish towels, playing piano and was a collector of Precious Moments figurines. Baking for her family and others was a huge part of her life. She was well known for her wedding cakes and cookies, Christmas cookies, divinity, rosettes and candy. The neighbor kids knew where to get a treat and it’s no wonder her children have a sweet tooth after all the memories of baked goods in her kitchen. Her pies and rolls were known to be the best, and grandkids coming home for the holidays were often sent home or back to college with special treats.
Dorothea had a green thumb and spent many hours outside in the summer tending to her beloved flowers and garden. She will be remembered for her love of family and friends and devotion to her faith.
Dorothea is survived by her children Richard Howey, Duane Howey and Betty Hubrig (Terry Volk), all of Minot and Ruth (Rick) Dahly of Bismarck, ND; grandchildren Kristen (Boe Lautenschlager) Smith, Berthold, ND, Heather (Kenny) Bauer, Lincoln, NE, Tracy (Jennifer) Hubrig, Voltaire, ND, Travis (Stephanie) Hubrig, Minot, ND, Scott (Lori) Dahly, Hot Springs, SD, Matthew (Andrew Scott) Dahly, Minnetonka, MN and Katie (Brendan) Frost, Bismarck, ND; great-grandchildren Zachary (Andrea Beyer) Smith, Jacob Smith, Samantha (Sam) Ebert, Andrew (Amy) Smith, Alexandra (Mitch) Quist, Danielle Smith (Brian Bloms), Haleigh Bauer, Parker Hubrig, Hawkins Hubrig, Steel Hubrig, Lincoln Dahly, Landon Dahly, Ridley Frost, Willa Frost and 1 more Frost on the way; 11 great-great grandchildren, the most recent only a week old and 2 more on the way.
