Kay Mattern, 84, Minot, died peacefully on Thursday, November 7, 2024 in a Bismarck hospital with her family at her side.

Kay Marie was born on September 28, 1940, in Minot, ND, to Vernon and Maren (Anderson) White. She was raised and educated in Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1958. She continued her education at Minot State Teachers College where she earned a Standard Teaching Certificate. As a young adult she taught in Kenmare for three years, Bismarck for one year and Minot for one year. During the summer months she continued her education at MSTC and earned a degree in elementary education.

Kay married Dale Mattern on June 30, 1967, at Zion Lutheran Church, in Minot. They made their home in Minot where she taught in the Minot Public School System for thirty-three years. She retired in 1999, and she and Dale spent 19 winters in Gulf Shores, AL.

Kay was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she sang in the church choir for 50 years, taught Sunday School and Confirmation Classes and was a member of the Hannah Circle of the women’s organization (ELCW). Also, she was a member of La Sertoma and Minot Area Retired Teachers Association. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, traveling, reading, cooking, and baking.

Kay’s loving family includes her husband of 57 years: Dale; son: Mark (Retha) Mattern of Bismarck; grandchildren: Clara and Finn Mattern and sisters-in-law: Pat White of Minot and Mary Mattern of Cumming GA and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, brother: Keith White, sister: Susan (Dan) Hager and niece Maren Beth White.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the pastors at Zion and Good Shepherd Lutheran Churches, and to all the doctors, nurses, therapists, and others at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck who cared for Kay over the last several weeks.

Celebration of the Life of Kay Mattern: Friday, November 15, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., in Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.

A livestream of the service may be viewed by using the link in the website obituary. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot. Visitation: Thursday, November 14, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
