Betty Emerick
June 28, 1946-Nov. 18, 2024
Bowbells
Betty Emerick, 78, of Bowbells, ND, died peacefully in her sleep on November 18, 2024 at the Kenmare Hospital.
Betty Lou Mahnke was born June 28, 1946 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Minot to Albert and Lila (Martinsen) Mahnke. Betty was raised and educated in Benedict and Max. She graduated from Max High School in 1964. She then moved to the San Diego area in California and lived there for several years before coming back to ND in 1979. She made her home in Bowbells and resided there until her death.
Betty was an avid reader and enjoyed crafting. She was an accomplished knitter and crocheter. After being diagnosed with cancer herself, she made many chemo hats and donated them to the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota. She also knitted baby sweaters for mission kits put together by the United Methodist Church women in Bowbells.
Betty was fiercely independent and some would even say stubborn. She was a very loyal friend and her dead-pan sense of humor endured even in her last days. Betty especially loved her family and in her later years you could always find her FaceTiming with her youngest grandchildren.
Betty is survived by two daughters, Karen Young (Tim Braun); Heidi (Patrick) Fey; three granddaughters, Carrie (Chris) Parisien; Elise and Leela Fey; and one grandson, Corey Young (Christi Nelson), her brother, Bud Mahnke, nieces, Rebecca Mahnke; and Angela Canovi; nephew, Chris Mahnke; several great-grandchildren, great-nieces, great-nephews; and one very spoiled dog, Piper.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law, Bonnie Mahnke, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Betty will be laid to rest in Max, ND with her parents and a private family memorial will be held in the Spring.
Memorials are preferred to Society of St. Stephen’s Food Pantry in Bowbells.
