Felipia Hovland

May 1, 1936-Sept. 26, 2024

Powers Lake

Felipa (Faye) M. Hovland of Powers Lake, ND passed away on September 26, 2024, in her home with her family by her side.

She was born in Haleiwa, HI to Casiano and Cypria na Machica on May 1, 1936. She graduated from Waialua High School in 1955. She then went to school to become a barber, and ended up meeting the love of her life at Schofield Base where she cut his hair. He proceeded to ask her out on a date. Twenty-one short days later she married Royal Hovland on November 6, 1956, at the Schofield base church, and moved to Minot where Royal finished his education. They eventually ended up settling in Powers Lake where Royal had gotten a teaching contract.

They raised their family in Powers Lake where Faye was known to accompany Royal on many music trips with his students. Faye was famous for her “Bridge” parties where she would make goodies and coffee and have the ladies over to play cards. She loved golfing with her friends, baking, and had a special love for her “Quilting Ladies,” from the church. She was known for her lefse, which was hands down some of the best around, and considering that she was a Filipino, it was amazing that she acquired that skill. Her friends also convinced her to be a part of the Variety club, which hosted a tea for the graduating girls and provided other various activities.

Later in life she loved traveling and visiting with family and friends. Her girls took her on various trips to the Teton mountains, Mackinac Island, Niagara Falls, Glacier Park, Seattle, WA, and finally one of the best trips of her life in November of 2023, when they took her home to Hawaii and proceeded to rent a VRBO compound where only the family stayed and “LIVED” the Hawaiian life. We know that she felt like she had come home at that point.

Faye is survived by her daughters, Renette (Scott) Nordloef of Williston, Roberta (Roger) Helseth of Powers Lake, Rochelle (Cody) Irons of Halliday, and Lani (Tom) Lucy of Powers Lake; 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Vicki Wojtowicz of Moscow, PA, and Bernie Kowalchik, also of Jessup, PA; and a brother, Pas Machica, from Mt. Horeb, WI; her sister-in-law, Cheryl Malkowski of Belfield; brother-in-law, Tilman Hovland of Rugby; and Beverly (Rodney) Hudson of Eau Claire, WI.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Royal; her son, Randy; her daughter, Faith; her parents, Casiano and Cypriana Machia; her sister, Rose Siarot; her mother-in-law, Cora Hovland and father-in-law, Norman Hovland; brother-in-law, Norman (Bud) Hovland Jr., her sister-in-law, Kay Hovland; her son-in-law, Craig Rystedt; and her granddaughter, Alyssa Rystedt.

There will be a public visitation from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 30, 2024, at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Powers Lake, ND, with a private Family Service to follow. Faye’s Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Powers Lake, ND. Pastor Pauline Crowder will officiate.
