Deraine Freelander, 99, West Fargo, ND, died Monday, September 9, 2024, at Sheyenne Crossings Care Center, West Fargo, ND.

Deraine Alice Souther was born September 4, 1925, the daughter of Raymond and Julia (Long) Souther, in Larson, ND. She was raised and educated in the Columbus, ND area. Following graduation, she moved to Minot where she met Allen Woodrow Freelander. They married April 3, 1946. They made their home in Minot and together they raised four children.

Deraine worked as a seamstress and at various retail outlets such as Montgomery Wards, Newberry’s, and JCPenny’s before joining the Minot Public School System as a baker at Eric Ramstad Junior High School where she worked until her retirement. Allen passed away on May 16, 2015.

Deraine was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. She was active in Homemaker’s Club, the Moose Lodge Auxiliary, and a Charter member of the Minot Prairie Quilt Guild.

She enjoyed anything she could create with her hands. Baking birthday and wedding cakes for friends and family, sewing clothes, as well as designing and sewing wedding gowns for her daughters, crafting of all sorts, and quilting. Quilting became a passion of hers and she won numerous awards for her quilts. She also enjoyed dancing, playing card games, traveling and camping on family vacations.

The family would like to thank Sheyenne Crossing Care Center for the support and care of Deraine and her family.

Her loving family includes: children, Cheryl (Richard) Linnertz, Peoria, AZ, Arnold (Ann) Freelander, Fairfax Station, VA, Gail Snead, Fargo, ND, Lori (Tom) Shoman, West Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Carman (John) Fors, Tamara (Casey) Fromm, Jennifer (Shawn) Weigel, Lauren Freelander, Kyle Freelander, Jonathan Snead, Gage (Kristin) Shoman, Chandler Freelander, Kaitlin Snead, Hallie Shoman; great-grandchildren, Chase Christenson, Mason Fors, Sayge Weigel, Sienna Weigel, Ellison Fromm, Lucas Fors, Ashton Thom, Sophia Fromm, Bria Thom, Ciana Fors, Casey (CJ) Fromm, Dallen Weigel, Declan Fromm, Jackson Paskett, Macie Shoman, Lena Shoman; and several nieces, nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 69 years; brothers, Sylvester McNabb, Julian McNabb, Donald Souther; sisters, Adeline Carroll, Violet Wilson, Carol Souther, Rosemary Kallias, Evelyn Preskey, Bonnie Kjelbertson, LaVonne Birney.

Funeral: Friday, September 20, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church Minot Church, Minot.

Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at Bethany Lutheran Church Minot Church, Minot.

Memorials: are preferred to Vocation Training Center, Fargo ND.
