CARPIO – Darrell LeRoy Helseth, 85, formerly of Carpio, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024, at a New Rockford care center.
He was born Dec. 17, 1938, in Minot, to Oscar and Junette (Vaagen) Helseth. He was raised in the Carpio area, graduated from Carpio High School in 1956 and attended NDSU in Fargo.
Darrell was united in marriage to Mary Black on June 7, 1958, in Foxholm. They lived in Fargo where he first worked at Shenley’s Distillery, and later as a parts manager at a Volkswagen dealership. They returned to the Carpio area where he and Mary raised their children. He farmed and ranched with his uncle, Clarence Vaagen. Darrell later had his own farm where he farmed and ranched until his retirement. His wife, Mary, died Dec. 28, 2013. He continued to live on the farm until moving to Maple View in Minot, and later to the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford.
Darrell served as mayor of Carpio, served on the Carpio Ambulance Service, was a fix-it man for anything, enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a ham radio operator KAØJTL.

Darrell was preceded in death by: his grandparents; parents, Oscar and Junette Helseth; wife, Mary Helseth; infant daughter, Susan Renae Helseth; daughter, Denise Stoa; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Bruce Johnson; great-grandchildren, baby Wodtka and Ryan Edward Johnson; brothers, Gary and Bruce Helseth; sister-in-law, Judith Johnson; and brothers-in-law, Jerry Schimetz and Wesley Black.
Graveside service: 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, at Nazareth Lutheran Cemetery, rural Carpio. Bring a lawn chair.
