Sherwood George Haakenson was born August 5th, 1949 in Rugby, North Dakota to George and Evelyn (Watkins) Haakenson. He died peacefully at the age of 74 years on Monday, June 17th at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, North Dakota. He graduated from Willow City High School in 1967 and was drafted into the US Army in 1969. Upon returning to North Dakota, he married his high school sweetheart, Cindie Semler on June 27th, 1971. They settled on a farm in South Valley township, Rolette County, where Sherwood farmed and ranched. Sherwood is survived by his loving wife of nearly 53 years, Cynthia; his son, Todd (Kristie) of Barton and grandsons, Brody, Brock, Blake (Kaitlyn) and Brant; his daughter, Brekka (Corey) Belisle of Rugby, granddaughter, Olivia and grandson, Jayce; his sisters, Carolyn (Stan) Due of Minneapolis, MN and Geneva (David) Weisser of Hastings, MN; brother-in-law, Tim (Connie) Semler of Willow City and sister-in-law, Susan (Tim) Arneson of Polson, MT. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Rugby with full military honors to follow. Burial will take place at a later date at the Barton Cemetery.
Friends may greet the family on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby with a prayer service and sharing of memories beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
