Dennis Smith, 83, Minot, passed away on Monday, October 30, 2023 in Sun City, AZ.
Dennis was born on August 9, 1940 at Powers Lake Hospital in Powers Lake, ND to Michael and Clara (Furness) Smith. He was raised on the family farm near McGregor, ND and attended Merryfield Country School. Dennis graduated from McGregor High School in 1958 and Minot State University in 1964.
On July 29, 1962, Dennis was united in marriage to Melanie Gustafson at Bethany Lutheran Church in Lignite, ND. From this union would come three children, Michael, Tracey, and Robert. Dennis worked for Midwest Motor Express, Quast Transfer, Westlie Motors, and G&P Commercial Sales. The couple would later be snowbirds for thirteen years, but stayed in Arizona for all of 2022-23 so Dennis could continue his cancer treatments.
Dennis bowled and golfed for many years and played slow-pitch softball until he was 55 years old. He was a big Twins fan and a die-hard Vikings fan. Most of all, Dennis loved his family very much and will be greatly missed.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 61 years, Melanie Smith; sons, Michael Smith, Minot, and Robert (Susan) Smith, Maple Grove, MN; daughter, Tracey (Dominick) Perrone, Angola, IN; brother, Doug (Cindy) Smith, West Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Kallie Schloer, Brianna (Josh) Clark, Sarah (Daniel) Schommer, Nicole Smith, Jackson Smith, Melayna Smith, and Ashley Perrone; great-grandchildren, Linkoln and Hudson Schommer and Kayzlee and Dravyn Clark; brother-in-law, Jim Gustafson, Minot; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Clara Smith; sister, Jan Skaare; parents-in-law, Raymond and Jewel Gustafson; sister in law, Caryn (David) Peterson; and brother-in-law, Jerry (Ella Marie) Gustafson.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Minot. The service will be livestreamed for the public to view and can be accessed by going to the Christ Lutheran Church website: www.christlutheranminot.org.
