Area residents concerned about the state of the nation’s democracy gathered Saturday for a Hands Off! event organized by the Plum Valley League of Women Voters and North Dakota Human Rights Coalition.
The second peaceful protest held by the organizations in Minot, Saturday’s event was part of similar events held across the nation to defend benefits, rights and the essence of democracy, according to information from Plum Valley LWV. About 250 participants gathered near Minot City Hall.
“We have gathered here for one reason – to demand change and hold those in power accountable. Our three core demands reflect the deepening frustration with (President) Trump’s destructive approach to power and policy,” Denise Dykeman, president of Plum Valley LWV said in opening remarks at the event.
The event called for:
– Ending the billionaire takeover, stating that Trump, empowered by Congress and Elon Musk with the Department of Government Efficiency, are not just dismantling public services but are handing over national systems to billionaires.

– Stopping cuts to critical programs, including threats to programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
– Protecting marginalized communities, including immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, transgender people and other vulnerable groups whose rights are under assault.
“This is not business as usual, and our elected officials need to listen to and stick up for hardworking American people. This is a national crisis, and we refuse to stay silent,” Dykeman said. “The message behind our movement is clear: Hands off our benefits, our rights and our democracy.”
