GARRISON –  Fort Stevenson State Park will host a sweet day of learning and fun as visitors explore the art of making maple syrup on Saturday, April 12, according to North Dakota Parks and Recreation.

The park team will demonstrate how to tap trees, collect sap and turn it into maple syrup. Visitors will learn about the history of maple syrup and what equipment is used in the process to make the syrup. These presentations will take place at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. in the tent-camping loop near campsite T3.

Visitors also can enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Children’s activities and related programs will occur throughout the day.  Moon Cats will perform a musical show at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Maple sugar on snow, or “maple taffy” as it is sometimes referred to, is an easy way to enjoy maple candy and the treat will be available for purchase. Local youth groups will be selling maple cotton candy and maple popcorn while supplies last.

Starting at 10 a.m. and continuing as supplies last, visitors can try pure maple syrup on pancakes as part of the park’s pancake and sausage breakfast, served by the Friends of Fort Stevenson.

The park charges a $7 vehicle entrance fee unless a state park annual pass is displayed.  Fort Stevenson State Park is located three miles south of Garrison.

Starting at $2.99/week.
