City: Petition signatures valid for election

More than enough petition signatures have been validated to support a special election for mayor, according to the City of Minot clerk’s office.

Petitions submitted earlier this week by Josiah Roise contained 363 signatures that were validated. Petitions needed 293 verified signatures.

The Minot City Council will consider setting a special election at its next meeting on Monday, April 21. According to the clerk’s office and state law, an election would need to be scheduled at least 95 days into the future, and candidates would need to file petitions by 4 p.m. on the 64th day before the election. A candidate must collect 300 signatures to get on the ballot.

The timeline means a special election could not be scheduled before the end of July at the earliest. Minot voters will go to the polls in another special election Tuesday, June 3, to decide on a half percent sales tax for the Minot Park Board.

Minot’s mayoral vacancy occurred with the resignation of Mayor Tom Ross on April 1. Council President Mark Jantzer is filling the mayor’s position in the interim in accordance with succession requirements in state law.

Starting at $2.99/week.
