Spirit Lake council updates shooting incident

FORT TOTTEN — Two tribal members are dead and another is in critical condition after a shooting incident in St. Michael on the Spirit Lake Reservation on Tuesday.

In a news release on Tuesday, the Spirit Lake Tribal Council initially indicated all three victims were deceased but a subsequent retraction released on Wednesday updated that one of the victims remains in critical condition.

“While this adjustment in our report is crucial for accuracy, it does not diminish the severity of this incident and the impact it has on our community. We sincerely apologize to the family affected by this tragedy and take full responsibility for any misinformation that may have been disseminated,” the release said.

The suspect was apprehended at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and is currently in custody based on tribal information. Neither the victims nor the suspect have been identified at this time.

The tribe put a shelter-in-place order for all residents within the reservation boundaries, including the districts of St. Michael, Fort Totten, Crow Hill and Wood Lake, until the suspect was apprehended.

The Spirit Lake Tribe acknowledged the swift response by law enforcement and first responders, which included Fort Totten Bureau of Indian Affairs, Turtle Mountain BIA, Ramsey County, Benson County, North Dakota Highway Patrol, Devils Lake Police Department, FBI, U.S. Border Patrol, Lake Region Drone Team, Spirit Lake Ambulance, Spirit Lake Incident Command, Spirit Lake Emergency Management Services and Lake Region Ambulance.

“We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Governor (Kelly) Armstrong and Major General (Alan) Dohrmann for their prompt assistance and air support during the search for the suspect. Their collaborative efforts exemplify the strength of our community and state in times of crisis,” the release concluded.
