ND’s oldest veteran dies
FARGO – A Fargo man believed to be the oldest veteran in North Dakota recently died at the age of 108.
Frederick Quam died on Feb. 24. His funeral and burial were held Saturday in Fargo, according to an obituary.
Quam, also believed to be North Dakota’s oldest man, according to an obituary, was born Oct. 2, 1916, in Fargo.
According to N.D. Air National Guard information when a 99th birthday celebration was held for Quam at the Fargo Air Museum in 2015, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces (known as the Army Air Corp until June 20, 1941) in December, 1941 and served as a B-25 aircraft mechanic during World War II and then served 29 more years in the N.D. Air National Guard. He was a charter member of the N.D. Air National Guard, which he joined Jan. 16, 1947. The U.S. Air Force became a separate branch from the Army Sept. 18, 1947, eight months after Quam joined the N.D. Air Guard’s 178th Fighter Squadron.
Ray Curtis, a World War II veteran from Minot, turned 108 on Feb. 11.
