Man from St. Michael charged with double murder at Spirit Lake

FARGO — A St. Michael man has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder for a shooting on the Spirit Lake Reservation last week.

According to information from Acting U.S. Attorney Jennifer Klemestrud Puhl released on March 10, Johnnie Jay Gaking, 27, St. Michael, made his initial appearance to face federal murder charges in Fargo on Monday.

A federal complaint charges Gaking with shooting and killing an adult victim and a child victim at a residence on the Spirit Lake Reservation near Tokio on March 4. Court documents allege Gaking shot another adult victim who was later transported to the hospital for treatment. Gaking departed the residence and was apprehended by law enforcement that same day and transported to a hospital for apparent self-inflicted injuries.

The case is being investigated by the FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s office.
