Garrison man charged for hotel shooting

A Garrison man has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies stemming from a shooting at a Garrison hotel on Feb. 28.

Jason Sam Chamberlain, 45, Garrison, made his initial appearance in South Central District Court via ITV from the Ward County Jail on March 4. Chamberlain has been charged with felon in possession of a firearm, reckless endangerment and terrorizing, all Class C felonies; and two Class B misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief and discharging a firearm within city limits.

According to court documents, McLean County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the North Shore Inn in Garrison the evening of Feb. 28 after receiving a report that Chamberlain had fired a handgun inside the hotel’s lobby. Responding law enforcement located a handgun magazine and found a damaged plasma TV.

Security video of the incident showed Chamberlain entering the hotel lobby and pushing items on the front desk to the ground. Chamberlain then walked down a hallway, but returned to the lobby with a 1911 pistol in his right hand and fired one round which struck the television. Chamberlain then pointed the firearm at the door behind the front desk before leaving the hotel on foot.

According to court documents, a North Shore Inn employee was interviewed, who said he was watching TV with his son in a room behind the front desk when he heard noises and a gunshot from the lobby. The employee opened the door and saw Chamberlain walking to the front door. Chamberlain pointed the firearm at him after he saw him.

Chamberlain was identified from a photo provided to patrons and staff at a Garrison bar, who reported that Chamberlain had been removed from the bar shortly before the incident at the North Shore Inn. Chamberlain was later arrested at a residence in Garrison and transported to the Ward County Jail. He was unwilling to speak with investigators when they attempted to interview him later.

Chamberlain is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, April 16.
