ND’s US attorney steps down

FARGO – Mac Schneider, U.S. attorney for the District of North Dakota, resigned on Sunday, according to his office.

Jennifer Puhl is serving as acting U.S. attorney and will be in that position until a new U.S. attorney is appointed and confirmed, said spokesperson Terry Van Horn.

Schneider, a native of Fargo, was sworn in as U.S. attorney for North Dakota in December 2022, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of North Dakota. Prior, he worked in private practice in Fargo. From 2008 to 2016, Schneider, a Democrat, was a member of the North Dakota Senate. He was also an adjunct faculty member with the University of North Dakota School of Law. He received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 2008 and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Dakota in 2002.

Sens. John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer, both R-ND, recommended in January that President Donald Trump nominate Nicholas Chase to be U.S. attorney for the District of North Dakota., according to information from Hoeven’s office.

Chase currently serves as a N.D. district court judge for the East Central Judicial District, an appointment by former Gov. Doug Burgum, a Republican. Prior, Chase served for 20 years in the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Chase received his bachelor’s degree from Minot State University in 1991. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of North Dakota in 1995 and was admitted to the N.D. State Bar also in 1995, according to State of North Dakota Courts information.
