Kenmare man charged with kidnapping
A Kenmare man has been charged with multiple felonies, including kidnapping, after an alleged domestic violence incident on Jan. 30.
Ibrahim Halil Herdem, 29, Kenmare, made his initial appearance in North Central District Court on Monday. Herdem is charged with kidnapping-terrorize-adult victim, a Class A felony; domestic violence-serious bodily injury, felonious restraint-adult victim, two counts of interference with telephone during emergency call-intentional, all Class C felonies; and domestic violence-substantial bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor.
According to court documents, Kenmare Chief of Police Allen Hall was contacted on Jan. 31 by the alleged victim, who reported a domestic violence incident the night before. She stated she was meeting with a friend in a Kenmare bar when Herdem, her live-in boyfriend, arrived in an agitated state and demanded she leave.
The alleged victim said that upon returning home, Herdem became violent. She told police she attempted to use her cell phone and a smartwatch to call for help, but Herdem took the devices from her.
According to court documents, Herdem refused to allow her to leave her bedroom or use the bathroom and continued to assault her. She said at one point she was able to escape by jumping outside through a window, but Herdem pursued her and proceeded to cover her nose and mouth with his hand, preventing her from breathing.
She said she eventually broke away from Herdem and returned to her residence and locked the front door. Herdem entered the home through a back door, but she retrieved a knife from her son’s room to dissuade him from assaulting her further. She said she locked the door and escaped the home shortly after. The alleged victim said the whole ordeal lasted nearly four hours.
Judge Stacy Louser did not grant bond according to jail records, which also note Herdem is being held for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Herdem has been scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on April 22.
