Thirteen Minot businesses fail checks for tobacco compliance

The City of Minot has released the results of tobacco compliance checks conducted this month, which found 13 local businesses in violation.

The random compliance checks were conducted by the Minot Police Department at 43 establishments. Thirty of the businesses passed their checks, while 13 were found to be in violation for not properly checking ID’s to prevent sales to minors.

The city’s release noted tobacco compliance failures are typically rare in Minot, especially to occur at the same retail locations and by the same clerk.

Penalties for failing to properly check identification by a clerk is $50 for the first offense, $150 for a second offense and $300 for any subsequent offense. Businesses face a civil penalty of $100 for the first offense, and suspension of their tobacco license for seven days, 30 days and one year for subsequent offenses within a 12-month period.

Starting at $2.99/week.
