Minot man pleads guilty to felony charges stemming from shooting at Minot hotel

A Minot man has entered guilty pleas to two felony charges stemming from his role in a shooting incident at a Minot hotel in October 2024.

Chance James Braun, 25, entered a change of plea in North Central District Court on Monday, pleading guilty to reckless endangerment-extreme indifference-dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, both Class C felonies.

The charges against Braun stemmed from an incident at a northwest Minot hotel on Oct. 6, 2024, where Minot Police were dispatched for a reported shooting. Responding officers detained Deyan Luetzen, 23, Minot, as he was fleeing from the scene, and recovered two firearms outside the hotel.

Officers found more than 50 spent brass casings in the hallway of the hotel outside the room Luetzen was renting, according to court documents. Luetzen was shot in the exchange and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Luetzen stated in an interview that he was alone in the room sleeping, and denied having a firearm or shooting one and didn’t know who shot him.

Video surveillance showed Luetzen and Braun running down the stairs of the hotel moments after the shooting. Both men had their faces obscured by a mask or a hood, and Luetzen was holding a Glock 26 9mm which was recovered by law enforcement on the trail he left from the hotel.

Braun was interviewed by law enforcement on Oct. 7, and said he, Luetzen and a third individual named Shaquille Means had been in Luetzen’s room that evening. Braun said Luetzen and Means had a fistfight shortly before the shooting, and that Means left the room.

Braun said he and Luetzen decided to leave the hotel, and once they left the room they began taking fire from Means who was hiding in the stairwell between the second and third floors. Braun admitted to shooting a handgun he possessed through the walls and floor in the direction he believed Means was hiding. Braun had previously pleaded guilty to felony simple assault of a peace officer in 2021, and was prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Judge Todd Cresap ordered Braun to serve a concurrent sentence of five years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, to first serve two years with credit for 109 days already served. Braun was ordered to complete two years of supervised probation upon release, and to have no contact with the hotel. The firearm was ordered to be forfeited to law enforcement. Braun was also assessed $525 in court fines and fees.

The cases against Luetzen and Means are proceeding, and have been joined and consolidated based on court records. Both are scheduled to appear for a pretrial conference on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Luetzen is currently being held at the Ward County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
