Minot man pleads guilty to burglary

A Minot man has been sentenced to time served after pleading guilty to a count of felony burglary and misdemeanor criminal mischief.

Branton Tyler Jones, 39, Minot, entered his change of plea in North Central District Court to the Class B felony and Class A misdemeanor on Jan. 15.

According to court documents, the charges stemmed from a March 18, 2024, incident when Minot Police were dispatched to a residence in southwest Minot. Officers arrived on scene to find Jones and an injured male in the driveway of the home.

The injured male was covered with blood and told the responding police officers Jones entered his home through a side garage door. Jones entered the basement of the home, and the victim said he heard smashing before Jones came up the stairs with a golf club in his hand.

The victim said he did not know who Jones was, but he had seen him before and believed he was the friend of a family member. Jones demanded the keys for a vehicle parked in the garage, and Jones refused to leave. Jones eventually pushed the victim who fell onto the stairs and was injured on his right arm. Jones admitted to smashing windows in the basement with the golf club, which were estimated to cost $1,500 to replace, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Judge Richard Hagar sentenced Jones to serve 66 days of a three-year sentence with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, with credit for 66 days already served. Jones was ordered to complete three years of supervised probation, and to have no contact with the victim. Jones was also assessed $1,350 in court fines and fees.

Starting at $2.99/week.
