Belcourt man fatally shot by BIA police officer

BELCOURT – A Belcourt man was fatally shot by a Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer Sunday morning.

According to information released by the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, law enforcement officers from the Bureau of Indian Affairs-Office of Justice Services (BIA-OJS) at the Turtle Mountain Agency responded to a residence after receiving a report of a suicidal male with a firearm. BIA officers pursued the individual after a car chase ensued, which came to an end on Highway 5, west of Belcourt near Sky Dancer Casino.

Video recorded by a bystander and published on social media shows the vehicle parked in a ditch, and the driver exited the vehicle before a BIA officer fired multiple rounds with a rifle.

Jordan Parisien has been identified as the deceased, according to statements from family members.

The Turtle Mountain Tribe described the incident as, “a serious matter” in a statement released on Tuesday, which provided information regarding the next steps involved in the investigation.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave while the internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is conducted by the FBI, according to the statement.

“We understand that this event has raised concerns, and we are here to provide clarity and updates as the investigation unfolds. We ask for your patience and understanding as we allow the investigation process to proceed.
