Pierce County Fair official inducted into hall of fame
Don Jelsing, vice president of the Pierce County Fair, has been inducted into the Heartland Association Hall of Fame, the Heartland Association of Fairs, Festivals & Events announced.
The award was presented during the annual convention held Nov. 21-23 in Minot, at which he was joined by his family, friends and peers in celebration of the recognition.
Jelsing’s passion for the Pierce County Fair spans more than three decades, during which he has transformed the fairgrounds and revitalized the fair itself. In 1991, he spearheaded the effort to resurrect the Pierce County Fair after a 32-year hiatus. With vision and determination, he led the restoration of abandoned fairgrounds, constructed essential facilities and inspired the community to rally behind his dream, the association stated in a news release.
Jelsing oversaw the construction of multi-use shelters, the development of a demolition derby ring and mud run tracks, and the addition of the Don Jelsing Ag Center to support 4-H exhibits, livestock shows and community events.
Jelsing’s leadership laid the groundwork for continued growth, including future plans for expanded carnival and rodeo spaces, multi-purpose buildings and improved amenities.
“Don lives, eats and breathes the fair,” said Khloe Sobolik, Pierce County Fair secretary. “His passion and dedication have created a legacy that will benefit Rugby and Pierce County for generations. It’s only fitting that his contributions are recognized with this honor.”
Jelsing also is involved in his community, including his work supporting a nondenominational church he helped establish with his brother.
