Minot AFB to benefit from 2025 defense
Funds to advance nuclear modernization at Minot Air Force Base are included in the fiscal year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, according to releases from U.S. Sens. Kevin Cramer and John Hoeven, R-ND. The Senate passed the legislation Wednesday, and the House of Representatives passed it last week.
Cramer is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and Hoeven is a member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Committee.
Funds to advance nuclear modernization at Minot AFB include $3.9 billion for the Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile, the nation’s Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent. The legislation also includes provisions requiring the ICBM count to be no less than 400 total, protecting the nation’s nuclear deterrent capabilities.
The legislation permits the restoration of nuclear capabilities across the entire B-52 strategic bomber fleet. Air Force Global Strike Command’s B-52, a long-range, heavy bomber, is capable of flying at high subsonic speeds and carrying nuclear or precision guided conventional ordinance.
The creation of a new assistant secretary of defense to oversee nuclear deterrence policies and programs across the Department of Defense is part of the bill.
The legislation has a 14.5% pay raise for junior enlisted servicemembers and a 4.5% pay raise for all other servicemembers.
The bill will now head to the president’s desk for his signature.
