Firms hired for bridge repair, lighting projects
The Minot City Council accepted the proposal of KLJ on Monday to provide engineering services on pier repair on the Third Street Bridge. Council members also agreed to work with Ideal Energy on converting outdated fluorescent lighting to LED.
The Third Street Bridge had been closed for a few months earlier this year while reviewed by the North Dakota Department of Transportation. The NDDOT concluded the bridge could be reopened to traffic without load restrictions but repairs to the pier should be made as soon as possible.
KLJ will provide services for pier repair and also review other potential repairs.
The council had included $350,000 in the 2025 budget to start the engineering process, with repairs in 2027. However, emergency repair needed for one pier is expected to cost more than $350,000. City staff will be presenting options to the council to address the issue.
The city also is exploring potential replacement of the Third Street Bridge at some future time.
The council approved working with Ideal Energy to seek 50% funding through the North Dakota Energy Conservation Grant Program to install LED lighting. Ideal Energy’s assessment of Public Works, Fire Station 2 and Rosehill Cemetery facilities showed a potential $14,500 annual energy savings.
According to a city memo, targeted locations for the upgrade include Public Works, Fire Station 2, the airport, library and cemetery. Total cost is estimated at $80,357, of which the city’s share would be $40,178.
