Grant brings free virtual wellness to Parkinson’s Community
The Minot Family YMCA announced it has received a grant from the Parkinson’s Foundation to provide free access to YMCA360, a virtual health and wellness platform, to individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease or Parkinsonism.
YMCA360 offers a vast library of more than 6,000 on-demand videos, which participants can access from any internet-enabled device from their homes. The platform covers a wide range of topics, including general fitness, yoga, balance improvement, mindfulness, meditation and even cooking classes. The expansive library also includes content that can provide meaningful support and activities for people with Parkinson’s or Parkinsonism, focusing on wellness activities that improve both physical, cognitive, and mental health, according to a YMCA news release.
Though the YMCA360 platform is typically included in a Minot Family YMCA membership or as a standalone membership called YMCA360+, with the funding through the Parkinson’s Foundation Grant, the Y is able to provide complimentary YMCA360+ memberships to individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease or Parkinsonism. As an added perk, each YMCA360+ member receives one free visit to the Minot Family YMCA each month.
The Y encourages those who qualify for the YMCA360+ initiative to take advantage of these free visits by attending the Movement Matters classes that are for anyone with Parkinson’s or balance related health conditions who want to maintain an active lifestyle while focusing on cardiovascular conditioning and flexibility.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Parkinson’s Foundation for their generosity and support,” said Russell Gust, Minot Family YMCA Healthy Living director, in the release. “Thanks to this grant, we can now offer this transformative program free of charge to individuals with Parkinson’s, Parkinsonism, and their families, especially those we aren’t physically able to attend our Movement Matters classes at the Y.”
