Campground closure extended for construction
BISMARCK – The USDA Forest Service Dakota Prairie Grasslands (DPG) re-issued an area closure order for the National Forest System Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Campground, the Maah Daah Hey Trailhead, and the Long X Trailhead. This order is a continuation of a previous closure order implemented on July 12.
The DPG is utilizing Great American Outdoors Act funds to renovate the campground facilities, realign site infrastructure with outdoor recreation demands, and improve public access to the adjacent wildlands and trail systems.
The long-planned modifications include upgrading the campground’s gravel roads, camping sites, fire rings, picnic tables, and vault toilets, and establishing a large equestrian trailhead that connects with the Maah Daah Hey, Sunset, and Long X trail systems, replete with horse corrals.
Construction began July 15 and the current closure order may remain in effect until May 23 or until rescinded. The closure order intends to protect public health and safety by restricting access during construction. Law Enforcement and Forest Protection officers will patrol the area. Exemptions may include previously scheduled and permitted activities.
