Five people injured, 25 cattle killed in I-94 crashes
DRISCOLL – Five people were injured and 25 cattle killed in a multiple vehicle crash on Interstate 94, near Driscoll, on Monday.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, about 1 a.m., a large number of black cattle escaped from a pasture that was adjacent to I-94, Many of them congregated on I-94 under the exit 190 overpass near Driscoll.
A semi hauling refrigerated produce, driven by Ewert Nel, 57, Edmore, was going east on I-94 and struck the cattle, entering the median and overturning. A small fire ignited on the truck but was put out immediately with fire extinguishers. Nel was not injured.
A 2024 Ford Escape, driven by Kaycee Anderson, 26, Napoleon, was also traveling east on I-94, and Anderson’s vehicle struck the cattle. Anderson sustained minor cuts and bruises and was transported to a medical center for treatment.
A 2014 Ford Fusion was going west on I-94, driven by Dina Diamanti, 41, Bigelow, Minnesota, and also struck the cattle. Diamanti and three passengers, Anderson Casteava, 20, and two juveniles, ages 13 and 16, were taken to a medical center for possible minor injuries.
Both lanes of I-94 under exit 190 were obstructed by cattle and vehicles. The road was closed for several hours and then reopened.
