Arrest made after hotel shooting

A Minot man made his initial appearance in North Central District Court on Monday after being charged in connection with a shooting at a northwest Minot hotel Sunday.

Deyan Robert Luetzen, 23, Minot, has been charged with reckless endangerment-extreme indifference-dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm-felon or violent misdemeanor, both Class C felonies.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Minot Police officers were dispatched to the hotel at 6 a.m. to investigate a reported shooting. Luetzen was located fleeing on foot from the hotel, and a Glock handgun was found in a field along his path from the hotel. Luetzen had been shot in the right leg and right foot, and was taken to a Minot hospital for treatment.

The Glock found by the officers had only one round left in it, and a second firearm was located outside the hotel below the window of the room Luetzen was renting. The window screen to Luetzen’s room was open, indicating the second firearm had been thrown from inside the room.

Officers observed bullet holes through the sheetrock all over the south staircase landing of the hotel, and additional bullet holes throughout the interior walls, doorways, floor and ceilings. Court documents indicate a large quantity of spent bullet casings were observed in the hallway outside Luetzen’s room, as well as fragmented bullets in the hallway and landing of the second and third floors of the hotel from a possible exchange of gunfire.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Luetzen told investigators he was alone and sleeping in his room after a party when he was shot, and that he fled on foot. Luetzen said he did not know who shot him, and denied having a firearm or shooting one. Luetzen was arrested due to his proximity to the recovered Glock, and being prohibited from possessing a firearm after a prior conviction for reckless endangerment last year.

Luetzen is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14. According to Minot Police, the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
