Former Max pastor found guilty for theft

The former pastor of a Max church was found guilty on Tuesday by a 12-person jury after a two- day trial in South Central District Court.

Erin Gullickson, 48, Benedict, was the minister at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Max, and was charged in May of last year with one count of theft of property, a Class B felony, after investigators accused her of spending nearly $80,000 from the church’s youth league account.

Gullickson’s actions were discovered by the church council after $40,000 of certificates of deposit were unaccounted for and found to have been diverted into an older account that the church’s council had believed to be closed years before.

Investigators described Gullickson’s spending as “egregious expenditures” in court documents, saying she spent all of the initial $40,000 within six months of the money being placed in the forgotten account.

After a final dispositional conference on Jan. 22, the parties made their case before the jury of 12 on Monday.

Prosecutor Ladd Erickson entered over 100 exhibits into evidence, listing a litany of purchases from websites such as Ebay, PayPal and Amazon for items like home decor, furniture, clothing, shoes, jewelry, vacations or cash withdrawals.

Testimony concluded Tuesday. The guilty verdict was returned shortly thereafter.

District Court Judge Cynthia Feland has ordered a presentence investigation and a sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.

Class B felonies carry a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison a
