North Dakota agriculture was on the table at Bishop Ryan Catholic School in Minot Wednesday.
Students utilized knowledge from classroom studies to answer trivia questions and earn prizes, and they took part in a North Dakota Farm-to-School Lunch, featuring products grown or made in the state.
The North Dakota Department of Agriculture annually invites schools statewide to offer a farm-to-school lunch, selecting Oct. 11 as the day to do so this year. However, a supplier that Bishop Ryan wanted to work with didn’t have enough product on hand at the time so the event was delayed to Wednesday.
Jennifer Jundt, head cook at Bishop Ryan, said this is the fifth year that she has worked with the farm-to-school program. The kitchen served pulled pork sandwiches with pork from Full Flavor Farms, Douglas; Bone’s BBQ Sauce, a Minot product; french fries from Simplot, Grand Forks; buns from Pan O’ Gold, Fargo; salad from Schepp’s Dakota Deli, Lansford; and dessert bars from Memories of Home by Becky, Minot.
Not only do the students look forward to the lunch event but more than 100 parents attended, Jundt said.
“The kids love it. The parents love it,” she said.
Jundt said no products were donated. The farm-to-school project supports businesses through purchases as well as educates youth about the state’s agriculture and products. Prizes for the trivia questions came from local vendors through The Foundry in Minot.
Jundt said she looks to purchase locally throughout the year, including from seasonal farmers markets, to provide more flavorful options.
“In supporting those businesses, good things come around, and we’ve done very well in the kitchen to be able to afford to do this and to feed our kids better and healthier,” she said.
