Minot murder suspect Donald Cooper Jr. to go to trial on reckless homicide charges next month in Wisconsin

Murder suspect Donald Lee Cooper Jr. is scheduled to go to trial Nov. 9 in state court in Milwaukee, Wis., on reckless homicide charges.

Cooper has been held at the Milwaukee County Jail since April 3, when he allegedly crashed into a vehicle while fleeing from police in Milwaukee and killed two people.

Cooper had been wanted in Ward County on charges that he shot and killed Dominick Stevens, 29, and attempted to kill Stephens’ passenger on Jan. 12. Cooper and co-defendant Michael Lamart Dennis II had been involved in a physical altercation with Stephens’ passenger at an area hotel. That led to a car chase through northwest Minot, with Cooper and Dennis firing at the car driven by Stephens, according to court documents. Stephens was shot twice in the back and crashed his vehicle into a boulder in front of the Minot State University Dome at 6:07 a.m. on Jan. 12. Stephens died. His passenger was not injured.

Dennis and Marcus Lee, the driver of the vehicle that Cooper and Dennis were in, have already been sentenced for their role in the shooting. Ward County has filed notice of its intent to extradite Cooper back to North Dakota to face the charges after the matters in Wisconsin have been dealt with.
