Cornelius Young, Minot, sentenced to prison for terrorizing

Cornelius Marcel Young, 34, Minot, was sentenced last week to five years in prison, all suspended but 18 months, and three years of supervised probation for terrorizing.

According to court documents, Young was accused of assaulting his fiancee’s brother, Joseph Letvin, and threatening the other man with a knife during an altercation at a Minot trailer on Nov. 3, 2017. His fiancee and children were also in the trailer at the time.

Young pleaded guilty to terrorizing, a Class C felony, in district court in Minot. He had previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanor simple assault in 2017 in Minot Municipal Court.

According to court records, Young and Letvin were fighting because the other man had turned up the thermostat in the trailer. Young yelled at his fiancee’s brother, punched him in the face, and knocked him into a wall. Letvin hit Young with a children’s toy. Young’s fiancee, who was holding her 2-year-old at the time, broke up the fight and persuaded Young and Letvin to go into opposite rooms. Letvin said he was going to call the police and Young reportedly grabbed a kitchen knife, went after Letvin and threatened him with the weapon. Young’s fiancee told police that Young had threatened to kill her brother when he grabbed the knife. Young pushed Letvin into a closet, where he landed on his back, and reportedly swung the knife at him. Letvin pushed Young away and Young’s fiancee jumped on Young’s back and bit his ear to distract him. Young got up and left and the other man left the trailer. Young had denied threatening the other man with a knife. Neither the woman or the children in the trailer at the time were harmed.

Judge Todd Cresap also ordered Young to pay $1,100 in court costs and to have no contact with Letvin.

Young will receive credit for 117 days already served in jail.

Young was also sentenced to 360 days in jail on a Class C felony bail jumping charge, concurrent with the first sentence, and ordered to pay $525 in court costs.

Starting at $2.99/week.
