Art expo fundraiser to help Parkinson’s, mental health

Elizabeth Hendrickson/MDN Founder Holly Jacobs formed Be-the-cause-of-art to benefit those with Parkinson’s and mental health illnesses.
What started as a conversation between two friends over coffee has now grown into a celebration of art, music and giving back. Be-the-cause-of-art celebrates giving back to those suffering with Parkinson’s and mental health illnesses.
The fundraiser will take place on Monday, April 14, at The Depot and Baggage Claim downtown, with doors opening at 6 p.m. The dress code is “comfortable formal.”
“My comfortable formal is a sequin dress and yours may be wranglers, a button up and sports jacket,” said Holly Jacobs, founder of Be-the-cause-of-art.
The night will kick off with hor d’oeuvres and with music by Minot saxophonist Erik Anderson. The night will include keynote speakers, music, games, door prizes, featured cocktails and a special surprise at the end of the night.
Art from more than 20 local artists will be on display throughout the venue and also will be on sale.

Jacobs was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2014 while living in Florida. After being diagnosed, Jacobs started to feel out of place in the support groups that were available as a lot of the members were much older.
“I started to feel like I lacked purpose,” Jacobs said. “I went to lunch with my friend Kim one day and I asked, ‘How would you like to start a benefit or a charity fundraiser?’ And she was immediately on board.”
Proceeds from the night will go to W(Evolve) for paint and chat therapy as well as towards Sparkle Art, which will be led by Jacobs. This new event will encourage those with Parkinson’s and mental health illnesses to dive into art and learn more about how to live with the illnesses they are facing, she said. Sparkle Art will be free to attend so that no one is turned away.
“I use the word spark because a lot of medications that Parkinson’s patients take increase dopamine, which can increase creativity,” Jacobs said.
