MSU students featured in MSO concert

Megan Kramer

Winners of the Minot State University Honors Competition, Megan Kramer, soprano, and Kimberly Knutson, alto saxophone, will be featured in the Minot Symphony Orchestra’s fifth concert of its 99th season on Saturday.

The concert will be held at MSU’s Ann Nicole Nelson Hall with a musicology overview at 6 p.m. and music beginning at 7 p.m. A piece known as “The Organ Symphony” as well as Albioni’s “Adagio for Organ and Strings” will be featured.

Briana Schwan, instructor of music and pianist at MSU, will be playing the organ for Albioni’s “Adagio for Organ and Strings” and MSU student Benedict Peter, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music, will play the organ for “The Organ Symphony.”

Kramer is a junior at MSU pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music education. Her focus is on vocal studies with Dr. DeVera Bowles. Kramer made her debut with the Western Plains Opera in the role of Mercedes in its fall 2023 production of “Carmen.” She has since understudied the role of Mimi in “La Boheme” and was Florika in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Kramer recently received the honor of winning the Oslo Chamber Choir Apprenticeship program and will work with the prestigious group in May in Norway.

Knutson, a dedicated saxophonist, is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music at MSU. Knutson recently won the Music Teachers National Association state-level competition. She hopes to inspire musicians of all ages to pursue their own musical goals and discover the joy of making music. Knutson will be featured on Pierre Max Dubois’ “Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra.”
