Brass Band of Minot salute to the Salvation Army on Nov. 14

The Brass Band of Minot is celebrating brass band history with a Salute to the Salvation Army concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Minot State University’s Ann Nicole Nelson Hall, according to information provided by Julie Reiten of the Brass Band of Minot.
The concert will start with a special guest. Captain John Woodard of the Salvation Army will sing the Star-Spangled Banner. The concert will continue with William Himes’ “Aspects of Praise,” which uses a simple hymn tune to illustrate various attitudes of Christian worship. The result is a dramatic and challenging score with contrasting tones, tempos and colors.
The band will then play two more Salvation Army favorites: “Holy Ground” and “Give Him His Glory.” As a change of pace and because the band requires very little excuse to play Christmas music, the concert will conclude with two holiday pieces: “Frosty the Snowman,” featuring base trombone player Brooke Jenks, and “Christmas Festival,” a medley by the legendary Leroy Anderson and one of the band’s favorites.
The Brass Band of Minot is directed by Gordon Troxel and consists of brass and percussion players from Minot and other communities in northwestern North Dakota who share a love of brass band music.
Brass Band of Minot concerts are free and open to the public, though cash and check donations are welcome.
This project is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The band’s 2021-2022 concert season will continue with concerts on Feb. 13 and April 10.
