I don't know anyone mining coal on their land in Western ND. Why would I be fighting about coal? I am talking about my situation and I don't care about other peoples situation, it's none of my business.

Please specify how these alternatives are being blocked.

Yes while we have an economy, we still don't have requirements for the same jobs across the rest of the country that require degrees and if you have a degree or higher degree than a bachelors than you are considered overqualified here in North Dakota but around the rest of the country, you beat out the person in front of you because of this extra degree. Double-edge sword for those who choose to get their higher education and want to live and work in North Dakota...it's time to get with the program......

From an outsider... It is filthy, cold,run-down, expensive, loaded with foreigners, 50 year old subsaharan men that came here in fema buses, but you got higher wages, new faces, and the outsiders finally have places to shop.

And yet you continue to vote Republican.

The problem isn't the politicians -- it's the lousy voters. You keep on electing these Republican theives -- even as they rob you blind.

You're so busy hating on Obama, Blacks, Mexicans, gay people, and poor families -- you don't see that the real problem is YOU.

Some things are much better than they were 10 years ago. In 2004, I was living in Minot and the employment situation wasn't anything to boast about. Not quite sure what you're talking about here Matt, I've been working in Minot since 1992 and never had a problem with any employment situation. I've always had a job, paid the bills, bought cars and put a little scratch away for a rainy day. If you had issues with having a job in 2004, perhaps your expectations were a bit high, I've got 4 siblings, 2 parents, and 11 cousins here that have never been without a job since 1980.

polidork There are no alternatives that have been found that replace oil. Elecric cars won't haul freight across the country and as far as wind farms they ruin the country side being spread out like they are.

"It is your fault if you do not make full use of this once in a lifetime opportunity."

And that's just it. It seems to me that the people who are complaining the loudest about everything are those who didn't position themselves to benefit from this.

In short, they aren't reaping the benefits of having an oil well sunk in their backyard and are jealous of their neighbors who are.

You all can pack up and move; say to the inner city of Detroit for example. It won't be long and you'll wish you were back in North Dakota.

If Minot is not as bucolic and peaceful as it once was, maybe it's time to stop clinging to the theory that economic growth is a panacea for all ills. Sure, there's money to be made here, but at what cost? The wind farms south of town don't seem to be as problematic as the oil farms out west; is there any wonder many of us would sacrifice short-term economic gain for long-term environmental and energy security? If you don't like the consequences of drilling and fracking, stop blocking the alternatives.
