"Now it's incumbent upon supporters of legalization to get the votes they need to make it so. Supporters of prohibition had to get people on board way back when. And people had to be on board to overthrow prohibition as well."
I can live with that. Maybe you haven't noticed, but the foes of prohibition have been getting more and more votes lately.

Unfortunately, it would never be that easy. Just like many issues that are controversial, there is no right or wrong answer. There are too many scenarios to deal with to sift through them all to say when it should be used and when it shouldn't. There are too many people worrying about saving everyone else. They want to make decisions for those people they think can't make intelligent decisions for themselves. This goes for many issues such as legalizing marijuana, smoking, abortion and the list goes on. I feel that this is truly one of those issues that people should have the choice. What happened to good old fashion choice?
Reasonable post, mschevs. Get those who can legalize it on board with you. Simple too.

Have your mother almost die from cancer because the chemo made her so sick she couldn't eat and had no relief from the pain. She should have been able to try marijuana to help her when nothing else would. Studies over and over have shown it is way safer then alcohol and has medicinal purposes. If it's legalized and you don't want to have it then don't. Simple as that.
Getting past all the emotion in the "legalize marijuana" debate is the first, and to me, the largest hurdle.
Just like booze, it's a substance that alters the user. In the same way? No. standin has quite informed us of that fact.

You have a point, Matt. Now it's incumbent upon supporters of legalization to get the votes they need to make it so. Supporters of prohibition had to get people on board way back when. And people had to be on board to overthrow prohibition as well.
Does using marijuana, in and of itself, violate the Negative Rights of others? If not, I have a very hard time thinking it should be illegal.

standin: "I haven't drank in 25 years yet it has been legal for me too drink. I CHOOSE NOT TO USE THE DRUG(alcohol IS A DRUG) THAT MAKES ME A BAD PERSON. It seems really strange how you DRUNKS promote booze and say ALL people who smoke pot are bad."
Guess what, standin? I used to smoke pot AND drink booze regularly to excess over 25 years ago, until I quit both. Both substances are depressants and affected my reaction time while using. I was "under the influence" of whatever I was taking at the time, albeit the influence was different for each substance.
There is no way to say that pot is completely harmless. Otherwise, you wouldn't be pushing it for its medicinal effects. No one would care to partake of an herb, or a fermented or distilled beverage, for only a placebo effect. That's the essence or purpose of taking any substance into oneself: a desired effect.
Booze is no "better" than pot. They're both depressants. One happens to be legal;

Bill, are you a complete idiot or only partial? I NEVER ONCE SAID FEED YOUR CHILDREN POT... Legalized booze is not alright for children and NEITHER IS POT(unless it is for medical reasons. Plain and simple. I have NEVER EVER promoted under age DRINKING, SMOKING CIGS, or under age DRUG USE... Why is it that NO one who is against it can have a REAL debate. I haven't drank in 25 years yet it has been legal for me too drink. I CHOOSE NOT TO USE THE DRUG(alcohol IS A DRUG) THAT MAKES ME A BAD PERSON. It seems really strange how you DRUNKS promote booze and say ALL people who smoke pot are bad. Ypou really need to investigate Dr. Sanjay Gupta from CNN and how he has REVERSED his opinion on pot. WAKE UP.
If there is no medical use for pot then WHY does BIG PHARMA have PATENTS on pot saying "botanical drug substance (BDS) in the treatment of cancer. Preferably the cancer to be treated is cancer of the prostate, cancer of the breast or cancer of the colon. US Patent # US20130059018 f
"See there folks, I have FACTS and you know FACTS*****and lies rule...... wait a minute here......Oh yea thats right this is a RADICAL RIGHT WING PAPER"
Yes, this attitude has me running to vote "yes" on making it legal right away....NOT.
leftywing, the topic is marijuana, not cocaine, but I digress. I left off using it years ago. Don't miss it one bit.
redblooded had some value in his points, compassion for one. I chuckled a little, thinking about the little old lady with her "garden."
I admire standin's dedication in posting "facts" about mj. The one salient "fact" today is that in some localities, it's illegal.
Perhaps standin should follow ND's hallowed ballot initiative process, to get this issue before the good people of ND for a vote.
Oh, not a resident of ND? Some would say he doesn't have a "right" to speak out on this "radical right wing paper," as he calls it.
But I say go ahead. I admire the dedication to the mission. Speak your mind, standin. All of it.
Will we be here long?
If you got bad news and you want to kick those blues.
How many DUI are from MARIJUANA in ND last year (2012) ?????
See there folks, I have FACTS and you know FACTS*****and lies rule...... wait a minute here......Oh yea thats right this is a RADICAL RIGHT WING PAPER

20. A study published in The American Journal of Cancer determined that cannabinoid receptors are expressed in human pancreatic tumor cell lines and tumour biopsies at much higher levels than in normal pancreatic tissue. Results showed that cannabinoid administration induced apoptosis. They also reduced the growth of tumour cells, and inhibited the spreading of pancreatic tumour cells
12.A study published in the US National Library of Medicine illustrates a decrease in prostatic cancer cells by acting through cannabinoid receptors.
13. A study published in the US National Library of Medicine outlined multiple studies proving the effectiveness of cannabis on prostate cancer.
14. Another study published by the US National Library of Medicine determined that clinical testing of CBD against prostate carcinoma is a must. That cannabinoid receptor activation induces prostate carcinoma cell apoptosis. They determined that cannabidiol significantly inhibited cell viability
Lung Cancer: You know them dar pot heads at HARVARD
A study published by the US National Library of Medicine, conducted by Harvard Medical School investigated the role of cannabinoid receptors in lung cancer cells. They determined its effectiveness and suggested that it should be used for treatment against lung cancer cells
lets talk BREAST CANCER LADIES: A study published in the US National Library of Medicine, conducted by the California Pacific Medical Centre determined that cannabidiol (CBD) inhibits human breast cancer cell proliferation and invasion. They also demonstrated that CBD significantly reduces tumour mass
A study published in the British Journal of Cancer, conducted by the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Complutense University in Madrid, this study determined that Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other cannabinoids inhibit tumour growth. They were responsible for the first clinical study aimed at assessing cannabinoid antitumoral action. Cannabinoid delivery was safe and was achieved with zero psychoactive effects. THC was found to decrease tumour cells in two out of the nine patient

At present it is estimated that marijuana’s LD-50 is around 1:20,000 or 1:40,000. In layman terms this means that in order to induce death a marijuana smoker would have to consume 20,000 to 40,000 times as much marijuana as is contained in one marijuana cigarette. NIDA-supplied marijuana cigarettes weigh approximately .9 grams. A smoker would theoretically have to consume nearly 1,500 pounds of marijuana within about fifteen minutes to induce a lethal response

Drugs used in medicine are routinely given what is called an LD-50. The LD-50 rating indicates at what dosage fifty percent of test animals receiving a drug will die as a result of drug induced toxicity. A number of researchers have attempted to determine marijuana’s LD-50 rating in test animals, without success. Simply stated, researchers have been unable to give animals enough marijuana to induce death
