Sheesh, here in Minnesota, school doesn't start until after Labor Day...and for years there have been some who are pushing to change that...to have school start in late August instead.

Do the teachers get extra pay if they do teaching in 10 months of the year instead of nine?

Most teachers would prefer to start after Labor Day. The buildings heat up all summer and it is miserable - especially for the little children. Many many years ago when I went to school in Minot we did start after Labor Day. I also agree - get rid of daylight savings!

open after labor day-end before Memorial Day-Operate public schools during this period of time--skip the 180 days concept--its not a magic number--

I like how Williston does it. They don't start until next week...so they start the school off for a few days to get the kids settled in and adjusted. Then get a long labor day weekend...and then back after labor day weekend to begin the year. I don't understand why so many schools have to start 2 weeks before labor day, but midweek before to me is a good way to do it.

Just remember, then you go after Memorial Day if you start later. You're basically exchanging one holiday weekend for another. I personally liked being done with school before June because we could travel without places being overcrowded and be able to go to graduation in other areas with a time conflict.
