It never should have been devised, but as it has, should be shut down without delay. The military prison at Guantanamo Bay (and the larger extrajudicial process in the 'War on Terror' as a whole) is a step backward as a freedom-touting nation.

Why close it? These people are terrorists, enemies of our nation, they need to be treated as such! Many should be given the death sentence, but will never receive it due to liberal objections,if their loved ones had been in the twin towers I wonder if they would still feel the same? I certainly don't want these criminals housed next to me! So leave them there, a good place for them!!!

Veritas, I agree with you if these laws are followed. When it comes to trials and implementation of sentences, speedy is better than slower-as-molasses.

Well, maybe I'd better say slower-than-molasses.

Yes. There is an unused Federal prison in Wisconson or some where like that is was being considered to house these individuals. They have been held for years without have the benefit of a trial or a chance to view the complete set of charges against them. The military needs to turn them over to Federal authorities and wash their hands of the whole mess.

The Gov't needs to cut expenses and to increase its creditabity in the world and closing Gitmo is a good start on both those fronts. These individuals all deserve to know what they are being charged with and put on trial. They cannot be detained forever without a trial that is against what America is all about.

Before exploring the possibility of speedy executions for remaining prisoners, it ought to be pointed out that 86 of them have since been cleared for release (some for years). They weren't even terrorists.

We just turn them loose in the USA, give them all the "benefits", ie cash, food stamps, section 8 housing, send them to college, free pressure cookers, backpacks, free trips back to Mecca etc. I'm sure nothing would happen since they are just "misunstood freedom fighters". Let's have a national lottery where all the "progressives" can sign up to take one home.

Dusty---Who refused to allow the closing of "club gitmo"? WHO?

Dusty---What are you talking about? If one branch of gov't overturns another branch's action that doesn't mean the action was criminal or unconstitutional or ignorant. I'm pretty sure Obama has read the constitution, he taught constitutional law for goodness sakes. But I defer to you, who knows all.

Don't even attempt to come on here and spout the constitution when you supported Bush/Cheney and the constitution busting Republicans of the last administration. Shame on you.
