John Manley Rice, 88, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2014, in Mesa, Ariz. He was a longtime Benson County farmer. Born Sept. 21, 1925, in Maddock, he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. His parents were Anna Lillian (Bjerkan) and Herman J. Rice. He was somewhere in the middle with 15 siblings, and always had a soft spot for kids and animals.
He raised durum wheat and Black Angus cattle and operated a construction business for a time and also loved going custom combining with his brothers and family members.
He married Geraldine Kenner and they had three children: John (Barb) Rice, Maddock, Jan (Loren) Ness, Minot, and Julie (Jim) Rees, Phoenix, Ariz.
He is survived by: his wife and children and six grandchildren, Paul, Janna, Katie and Will Rice, of Maddock, John Ness, Minot, and Alex (Stephanie) Ness, Salem, Ore., sisters, Lucille "Lucy" Larson and Katherine "Tickey" Larson; and brothers, David, Gene and Jay.
He was preceded in death by: his grandson, John T. Rice; parents; sisters, Evelyn "Koko" Burgess, Jewell Lynner, Helen Rice, Alice Harris, Patricia "Tesa" Banko, Blanche Schmid; brothers, Harley "Bud," Willard "Bill," Wallace "Budda," and Gerald "Jerry."
A celebration service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. in Maddock at the Zion Lutheran Church.
