Elsie M. Hodge, 95, formerly of Minot, passed away quietly on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, in her daughter's home in Mandan with her loving family by her side.
Elsie Marie Weinreich was born on Dec. 19, 1918, a daughter of William and Pauline (Ziegenhagen) Weinreich in Minot. She was raised on a farm in the Burlington area, where she graduated from Burlington High School.
On Oct. 13, 1940, Elsie was united in marriage to Benjamin Hodge in Minot. Following their marriage, while Benjamin was serving time in the Army, Elsie worked for the Minot Steam Laundry. In 1956, they purchased Leo's Tavern and changed the name to Ben's Tavern. Benjamin passed away in November of 1981. Elsie owned and operated the bar for some 40 years. The bar was a great joy to her, keeping her busy and making her many long lasting friends.
Elsie had a cabin at Lake Metigoshe, where she would spend a lot of time with her grandchildren. Many, many memories were made there which we still all talk and laugh about. She also loved playing league darts, traveling, cooking, and doing word search puzzles by the hour. She enjoyed cooking a lot. Some of her favorites, which we all love to this day, are her homemade pickles, turkey dressing, shrimp dip and Grandma's dessert. These recipes will carry on for generations in memory of her.
In 2000, she moved to Mandan to live with her daughter, Debra, and son-in-law Don, where she received excellent care. A great, BIG thank you goes to Don for opening his home and his heart for so many years for his mother-in-law. Elsie and Don became very close, and would banter back and forth. She enjoyed his culinary skills, especially his baked goods.
While living in Mandan, she helped babysit her two great-grandchildren, and really looked forward to seeing them. They were known to her as her two "sweeties." All her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a very special place in her heart.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Barb Heupel, who helped take care of our mother. Elsie really enjoyed her visits and help.
Elsie was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church of Minot.
Elsie is survived by: her children, Carol (Carmen) Wold, Bismarck, Connie (James) Skarhus, Rosemount, Minn., Gary (Laurel) Hodge, Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Debra (Donald) Tofteland, Mandan; sister, Mildred (Robert) Sethen, Minot; daughter-in-law, Nancy Hodge, Minot; and is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
